Nov. 6, 1964 - A 32-year-old Malden, Mass., father of two is undergoing psychiatric observation today as police from four New England states charge him with being the notorious “Green Man” wanted for the sexual attacks of at least a dozen housewives.
Albert DeSalvo was arraigned in East Cambridge District Court this morning on four charges and was sent for 35 days’ observation to Bridgewater State Hospital.
He was arrested last night by Malden police, accompanied by Cambridge officers and Connecticut State Police following a chase through Malden Square.
Police staked out DeSalvo’s home for a half-hour and then chased him through a backyard and over a fence to make the arrest.
DeSalvo had previously been arrested at his home Monday after police said they recognized him from a composite sketch drawn by a police artist from information supplied by a Cambridge woman assaulted Oct. 27.
He was arraigned Tuesday and bail was set at $8000 for continuance to Nov. 17.
At that time, Connecticut authorities heard about the case and determined that the pattern of attack fitted the method used in similar assaults in East Hartford, New Haven, Hampden, and Meriden.
The man wanted by Connecticut authorities was dubbed the “Green Man” because he wore green work trousers and posed as a repairman to gain entrance to homes.
By this time, Arlington, Mass., police entered the case and announced they will go directly to the Middlesex County Grand Jury with charges against DeSalvo for two separate attacks on women Sept. 29 in Arlington Heights and East Arlington.
Nashua, N.H., police want to question the suspect about an attack in that city last March.
Providence, R.I., authorities said DeSalvo was charged there with assaulting a 21-year-old housewife in her apartment last week and stealing her ring.
Framingham, Mass., police also charged that DeSalvo bound, gagged, and attacked a woman there last July 11.
DeSalvo was charged today with breaking and entering, confining and committing an unnatural and lascivious act involving a Cambridge woman last June, and breaking and entering and larceny in Cambridge last September.
Attorney John A. Asgeirsson said DeSalvo was a disabled Army veteran, injured in a tank accident during World War II in Germany.
He added that DeSalvo married a German girl whom he met as a member of the Occupation Army 11 years ago.
