Aug. 10, 1964 - Subscription Television, Inc., has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers professional basketball team to televise their home games during the 1964-65 season. The games are not now shown on commercial TV.
Subscription Television, California’s new pay-TV system, had previously signed a contract with another NBA team, the San Francisco Warriors.
Besides signing the basketball contracts, the new pay-TV system also announced that it had signed its first agreement with a Hollywood union. The 18-month interim agreement, signed with the Screen Actors Guild, provides that shows produced for pay-TV in Los Angeles and San Francisco cannot be broadcast in other areas without the consent of the guild. It also sets minimum rates and working conditions roughly comparable to those set for commercial TV and theatrical films.
Subscription Television started operating last month in Los Angeles and will begin in San Francisco on Friday.
