May 26, 1962 - Hitting the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 today is “Stranger on the Shore,” a piece for clarinet written by Acker Bilk for his young daughter, Jenny. The tune was written on a single scrap of paper by Bilk and handed over to Leon Young, who crafted the string arrangement. “Stranger on the Shore” is the first British recording to reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
