Stones Flop in Texas

June 7, 1964 - Britain’s Rolling Stones pop group were a fizzle when they appeared in a show at the Joe Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Tex., last night.

Local singers were cheered wildly. A tumbling act and the Marquis Chimps, trained trio of monkeys, were recalled to the stage for encores.

But the long-haired Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman — were laughed at and booed off the stage. Some in the crowd yelled: “Get a haircut!”

After the show, at the Teen Fair of Texas, one 17-year-old girl said: “All they’ve got that our own school groups haven’t is hair.”

One man was heard to say, “Shucks, I thought they were girls wearing one-piece bathing suits.”

Only 3,000 of the 20,000 seats were filled. The Stones had to compete with several other attractions — including a rodeo show.
