Soviet Press Hits Goldwater

May 25, 1964 - The Soviet press agency, Tass, today called Senator Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) “crazy” and “raving.” It also referred to him as “the modern cannibal” and “the leader of the American wild men.”

Commenting on his reference to the possible use of low-yield atomic weapons to destroy foliage used as cover by the Communist Viet Cong insurgents in South Vietnam, Tass declared: “He did not dare to say straightforwardly that the bomb would wipe everything living off the face of the much suffering land of South Vietnam.

“The call of the modern cannibal cannot but arouse indignation. It is to be hoped that sober people will be found in the U.S.A. who can bring the crazy Senator to his senses.”
