Solar Eclipse Sweeps Earth

July 20, 1963 - An oval patch of brief night swept around the world today from Japan to the Mid-Atlantic. The solar eclipse (pictured in Maine) thrilled thousands fortunate enough to have clear skies. Thousands more, unable to see the eclipse itself, witnessed the passage of the moon’s shadow, a giant cylinder of darkness extending below the clouds. The next total eclipse of the sun will arc across the South Pacific in 1965. March 7, 1970 is the next time a total eclipse will be seen in the United States. It will be visible in Florida, Georgia, and coastal fringes of the Carolinas. The next total solar eclipse in the New York area will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024.
