Smothers Brothers to Headline CBS-TV Show

Feb. 5, 1965 - Tom and Dick Smothers, the singing comedians billed in nightclubs and on the concert stage as the Smothers Brothers, will star next season on a half-hour weekly comedy series to be televised by CBS. They have made many guest appearances on television, but this will be their first series.

Titled “The Smothers Brothers,” the series is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Fridays. This season, the 9:30-to-10 time slot is filled by “Gomer Pyle,” but this show, according to present plans, will be rescheduled next fall at 9.

The story line of “The Smothers Brothers” will have a supernatural aspect. Tom is cast in the role of a bumbling angel — one who inadvertently creates problems rather than performing a miraculous service. Dick will portray an executive in the manufacturing business.

“The Smothers Brothers,” which will be filmed by Four Star Productions, will be produced by Aaron Spelling. The pilot film was written by Chris Hayward and Alan Burns, who are expected to be major contributors to the weekly series.
