Salinger Resigns, Murphy Appointed to U.S. Senate

Dec. 31, 1964 - California Governor Edmund G. Brown appointed George Murphy (pictured) today to the United States Senate seat the former actor won from Pierre Salinger in November.

Salinger (pictured in Los Angeles), a Democrat, had resigned effective today to allow Murphy, a Republican, to gain seniority over others elected to the Senate in November. Most of those elected will not be sworn in until Congress assembles on Monday.

Salinger had been appointed to the Senate after the death of Clair Engle.
