Sad Family Gathering in Hyannis Port

May 28, 1964 - Members of the Kennedy family gathered at Hyannis Port, Mass, today to observe what would have been the late President Kennedy’s 47th birthday.

A globe-spanning television program — “JFK: May 29, 1964” — will commemorate the anniversary. It will be beamed Europe by Telstar II.

Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy will take part in the Hyannis Port segment of the program.

Both the late President’s wife and brother are expected to discuss the Kennedy Library to be built in Cambridge.

Members of the Kennedy family were scheduled to arrive in Hyannis at 1:30 p.m. today aboard the family plane, the Caroline.

With Mrs. Kennedy will be her children — Caroline and John Jr. — and Mrs. Patricia Lawford and Mrs. Stephen Smith, the President’s sisters. Another sister, Mrs. Eunice Shriver, will be unable to attend.

Former Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, the President’s father, is already at his Hyannis Port home, where the international telecast will originate. His wife, Mrs. Rose Kennedy, is expected to arrive this evening from Boston, where she participated in another television broadcast.

President Kennedy and his brothers and sisters for years were accustomed to return to Hyannis Port for most of their major celebrations.

In past years, President Kennedy would attend a big birthday party with more than 20 Kennedy children present to honor their “Uncle Jack.”
