S.F. Giants trade Billy O’Dell to Milwaukee for Ed Bailey

Feb. 1, 1965 - The San Francisco Giants traded Billy O’Dell, lefthanded pitcher, to the Milwaukee Braves today for Ed Bailey (pictured), a lefthanded-hitting catcher who was one of the most popular players in San Francisco when he was a Giant from 1961 through 1963.  San Francisco traded Bailey to the Braves on Dec. 3, 1963, as part of a seven-player deal.

O’Dell, 33, became a Giant in a 1959 trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

Bailey played in 95 games last season, hit .262, drove in 34 runs, and hit five home runs. O’Dell had an 8-7 record.

Bailey, who had a multitude of injuries last season, said today that he’s feeling great.

“Hey,” he shouted over the long-distance telephone from Knoxville, Tenn., “I just got the word from Chub Feeney. He says I’m back with the troops! That’s terrific news.

“I got hurt a lot last season. I hurt my leg and my right thumb, and I kept banging fouls off my foot. Why, I missed a whole series at Candlestick last year on account of a sore foot. I could hardly walk for a week. And I tore a hamstring against the Phillies and then reinjured it against the Cards. But I’ll tell you, I’m okay now.”

John McHale, the Braves’ general manager, said: “O’Dell will provide us with the left-handed help we need in the bullpen.”

“I’m very happy to get O’Dell,” added Milwaukee manager Bobby Bragan. “His experience and ability should help us a lot.”
