Mar. 13, 1963 - Colorful Ryne Duren (pictured last season), 34-year-old fireballing Angel pitcher, was sold this morning to the Philadelphia Phillies for slightly more than the $20,000 waiver price. “It was one of the toughest decisions I ever had to make in my career as manager,” said Bill Rigney. “I have enjoyed this fellow, and I respected his ability to a great extent. He’s been a big part of the fine spirit of this club. I wish him nothing but luck, and I hope he goes on pitching for another five years. When he’s good, he’s excellent. He’s going to help Gene Mauch’s Phillies.” The main reason why Ryne won’t wear an Angel uniform any more is this: Dan Osinski and Art Fowler already have proved they can fulfill Rigney’s requirements as late relief men. Duren has been hit hard during exhibition season.
