Sept. 10, 1964 - The long-hair look, the shaggy-hair look, and the hat were way out ahead today when the pop stars went to lunch.
At the champagne-and-steak luncheon, given by the Variety Club of Great Britain, the awards to the stars who topped the 1964 pop poll organized by the “Melody Maker” magazine were presented.
The shaggy hair belonged to the Rolling Stones, who ousted the Beatles to win the British top beat group award.
The long hair belonged to blond Jimmy Savile, who was voted Britain’s top disc jockey.
And the hat — a striped jockey-style cap — was worn by Cilla Black, who received the award for the top female singer.
The Beatles, top of the poll’s international section, sent a taped message from America, where they are currently on tour.
For the luncheon at London’s Savoy Hotel, three of the ever-so-casual Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, and Bill Wyman — turned up without ties.
