Nov. 10, 1964 - Television variety and comedy shows are apparently using more rock ’n’ roll groups, country music singers, and teenage idols in the hope of increasing their ratings.
CBS announced today that the Dave Clark Five (pictured) would appear on “The Entertainers” Nov. 20. This will come one week after “The Entertainers” turns over its entire hour to a presentation about the Beatles scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Last night, the Rolling Stones were guests on “The Red Skelton Hour,” and the appearance was promoted through tune‐in advertisements in newspapers. Earlier this season, Skelton presented the Greenwood County Singers, and next month he will offer a group called the Young Folk.
On Sunday evening the American Broadcasting Company will pre‐empt “Wagon Train” for a taped show starring the Beatles. This week and next week the A.C. Nielsen Company is making a rating survey that will be of particular significance in the industry. It is to be issued Dec. 7. If the rock ‘n’ roll guests or teen‐age idols attract extra audiences, this report would reflect it.
In recent months, “The Ed Sullivan Show” has been presenting more rock ‘n’ roll groups than it formerly did. Last winter, the show had the largest audience it had ever received when it presented the Beatles. This fall, ABC introduced a rock ’n’ roll show, “Shindig,” on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m.
The network has been pleased with its rating. “Shindig” is on the air at the same time as CBS’s “Beverly Hillbillies,” whose rating has fallen since last season.
