Dec. 10, 1964 - Beatle drummer Ringo Starr went home from the hospital today looking fit and well. He left behind his famous tonsils — “They’ve been burned,” he announced — and nearly 100 screaming fans who turned up to see him leave. But first, attendants at London’s University College Hospital had to force a way through the fans so the 24-year-old Beatle could get into a chauffeur-driven car.
As Ringo was driven away, one of the nurses said: “He was a model patient. I wish they were all like him.”
When Ringo arrived at his £45-a-week flat in Knightsbridge, he found four new Mod-style suits waiting for him to try on.
“They’re a bit way out,” he grinned, “but so am I. So, I think I’ll take all four.”
Then Ringo talked about a new friend he had made in the hospital.
“Yesterday,” he recounted, “I saw a four-year-old girl called Deborah who had had her tonsils out, too. She wrote me a note. I sent one back. One of the nurses brought her up to see me. She was cute.”
Doctors have advised Ringo to relax for a couple of days.
“I’ll just stay home,” he said. “It won’t be worth it to go away now. We start rehearsals for our Christmas show in 10 days’ time.”
The future? “Now that I’m out of the hospital, I may start thinking about buying a nightclub somewhere in the West End. I’m in one most nights, so I may as well own one.”
Meanwhile, in the Bahamas, Beatle George Harrison and his girlfriend, Pattie Boyd, 20, were smuggled out of a side entrance after arriving at Nassau Airport.
A noisy group of fans anticipated the move, and George was asked whether he was getting married.
He replied: “Get lost!”
Pattie and George are staying at a waterfront home with wealthy Dr. W.T. Strach.
