RFK Visits Suffolk and Nassau Counties

Oct. 24, 1964 - Crowds ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 people greeted Democratic Senatorial candidate Robert F. Kennedy enthusiastically at each of his 12 scheduled stops today in Suffolk and Nassau counties. This evening, at a street rally on 181st Street in Manhattan, a strong police detail had its hands full trying to clear the way for the candidate.

His listeners in the suburbs, predominantly young people, applauded as he bore down heavily on problems close to their hearts: transportation, increased school needs, reapportionment of the Legislature.

On the commuter situation, he said: “During the last six years, my opponent has issued press releases calling attention to the problem. He has made speeches saying there was a problem. Just last week, he issued another statement calling for studies and surveys and discussions — but no action.”

Extra policemen, including several men armed with rifles, were assigned this morning to the South Shore Mall Shopping Center in Bay Shore, L.I., following a telephone call warning the Suffolk County Police that an attempt would be made on Mr. Kennedy’s life. There were no incidents.

While Mr. Kennedy spoke briefly to a huge crowd in the parking lot of the shopping center, extra plainclothes men were scattered through the crowd. A dozen uniformed officers with rifles and binoculars patrolled the roofs.

The call, warning that “Kennedy is going to get it in Bay Shore,” was made to the police yesterday.
