Jan. 19, 1965 - The future of 8-day-old Matthew Maxwell Taylor Kennedy, the ninth child of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was more or less settled for him today by his father.
Taking Matthew and his mother, Ethel, home from Roosevelt Hospital, Senator Kennedy quipped: “He’s going to be leader of the Assembly in Albany — we finally came up with a candidate.”
If Matt balks at Albany, Kennedy suggested another possibility.
“My brother Teddy was the ninth child in our family, and he became a U.S. Senator,” Kennedy said.
Mrs. Kennedy was asked if she planned to have more children.
“They are cheaper by the dozen,” she said.
Mrs. Kennedy praised the care given her and the baby at Roosevelt Hospital and added: “We hope to be back very soon.”
The parents drove directly to LaGuardia Airport with the baby and boarded the family plane, the Caroline, for Washington.
Kennedy said he would attend President Johnson’s inauguration. Mrs. Kennedy will not.
