Feb. 6, 1965 - Reg Fleming’s second goal of the game, with less than two minutes remaining, gave the Bruins a 3-2 victory tonight over the New York Rangers in Boston.
The deciding goal, at 18:02 of the third period, came when Fleming converted a blue-line shot by 22-year-old Bob Woytowich, who was playing his first NHL game after being promoted to the varsity roster from Hershey on Friday.
In addition to Woytowich, the Bruins also got a lot of good service from forward Jeannot Gilbert, who was called up from Providence Friday.
Fleming’s goals, which ran his season total to 13, offset the 11th and 12th goals of the season by Phil Goyette.
A converted defenseman, Eddie Westfall, a Fleming linemate, scored the other Boston goal.
The Bruins had what appeared to be another winning goal called back at the eight-minute mark of the third period when referee John Ashley ruled he had blown the whistle before a Wayne Maxner shot slipped through the pads of the New York goalie, Marcel Paille.
The rookie Boston goalie, Jack Norris, who staved off a series of Ranger attacks in the second period, wound up with 32 saves to 26 for Paille before a Boston Garden crowd of 12,053.
