British Forces Move Into Kuwait

July 1, 1961 - British forces moved into Kuwait in a howling sandstorm today. They came in response to a call by Sheik Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah for help against an Iraqi threat. At the same time that it announced that the British troops were coming, the Kuwait Government explained that Britain had pledged their withdrawal "as soon as the crisis is over." Saudi Arabian forces are also coming to help Kuwait, which charged that Iraq's Premier Abdul Karim Kassim had put his army on the border "to invade Kuwait."
