May 17, 1965 - The New York Rangers of the National Hockey League traded four players, including Marcel Paille, a goalie, to the Providence Reds today for Ed Giacomin (pictured), considered one of the most promising goalies in the American Hockey League.
The Reds also will receive a defenseman, Aldo Guidolin; a forward, Don McGregor, and a player to be named later.
Giacomin, a 25-year-old player from Sudbury, Ont., played the last five seasons with Providence. He finished the 1964-65 season with an average of 3.84 goals allowed in a game. His five-season average with the Reds was 3.55.
“Ed has been one of the top prospects outside the NHL for some time now,” Emile Francis, the Rangers’ general manager, said. “It’s no secret that three other NHL clubs have also been after him.”
Paille and Jacques Plante shared the goaltending job for the Rangers last season. Paille played 37⅔ games and had a 3.58 average. Plante, hampered by injuries, had a 3.37 average in 32⅓ games.
Paille is no stranger to Providence. He played for the Reds in 1957-58, when the club was a Ranger farm team. Giacomin played for the Long Island Ducks of the Eastern Amateur Hockey League before turning professional in 1959.
Guidolin, 33, and McGregor, 26, played all of last season with the Rangers’ Baltimore farm club in the AHL.
