Nov. 22, 1964 - Billy Cannon, the expensive fullback, came alive for three touchdowns and quarterback Cotton Davidson (pictured with coach Al Davis) passed for 358 yards in the Oakland Raider’s conquest of New York’s Jets today at Youell Field.
A crowd of 15,589 enjoyed the Raiders’ strong finish in the second half, after they had trailed from the start and were behind, 20-14, at the intermission.
The recovery, done with a Cannon go-ahead TD for 21-20 in the third quarter, was stretched to 35-20 in the fourth and brought the Raiders up to 3-7-1 in a belated charge for a decent standing in the American Football League’s Western Division.
Coach Al Davis said of his Oaklanders: “The defense did real well, but we’re still not smooth. I would rate this a 100% effort, though I think we played better games earlier when we lost two or three which we should have won.
“However, I’m thankful we gave it to New York. The Jets tore us apart [35-13] in Shea Stadium in October, and this come-from-behind performance pleased me since I’m from Brooklyn. Linebacker Archie Matsos called an intelligent game. Give him credit for giving continuity to our defense.”
The defense contained Jets fullback Matt Snell, limiting him to 65 land yards and 17 on pass receptions, a far cry from the October night totals, when he ran roughshod over the Raiders.
Next Sunday, the Raiders go to Denver.
“It sounds silly to say Denver looks like the toughest outfit on the rest of our schedule,” Davis said. “We whipped the Broncos here, 40-7. But they’ve been nasty of late.”
