QB Earl Morrall Loses Big Toe

Sept. 8, 1962 - Earl Morrall (#14), the Detroit Lions’ quarterback, lost the big toe of his left foot today when his foot became caught in a rotary power lawn mower. He said he did not believe the injury would keep him from playing in the Lions’ NFL opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 16. Morrall broke in with the Forty-Niners in 1956 and was traded to the Steelers the following year. The Steelers traded him to the Lions as part of a deal for quarterback Bobby Layne.
