President Kennedy Takes Caroline and Friends to Candy Store in Massachusetts

July 29, 1961 - President Kennedy took his daughter, Caroline, and ten of her cousins and playmates to a neighborhood store in Hyannis Port today for candy. Mr. Kennedy, wearing a sports shirt and tan slacks, ushered the youngsters into the store and asked what they wanted. The result was chaos. "Shhhh," said the President, as the youngsters shouted their preferences all at once, "now wait a minute, one at a time." The children quieted down for a few moments, but the President had to shush them several times again before all the youngsters had their candy bars. Three-and-a-half-year-old Caroline held her father's hand for a while, but soon dashed ahead with the other children.
