Aug. 12, 1963 - President Kennedy took Caroline and John Jr. to visit their mother again today. Charlie, the children’s Welsh terrier, went along. Mrs. Kennedy was reported doing well in the hospital at Otis Air Force Base. She walked more today, visiting a sitting room in the hospital suite, and had solid food. The President brought her two books before he flew back to Washington in mid-afternoon. Six days ago, he rushed to the hospital from the White House for the birth of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died last Friday morning in Boston. The books were “Catherine di Medici,” by Jean Heritier and “Letters From the Vatican,” a collection written under the pseudonym Xavier Rynne. The Kennedy children were much more excited about the hospital visit and the 12-minute helicopter ride between Squaw Island, the summer White House, and Otis Air Force Base than was Charlie. The terrier couldn’t wait to get out on the hospital lawn and then made President Kennedy clap his hands and whistle before he would climb back aboard the helicopter for the return trip. Mr. Kennedy and the children visited Mrs. Kennedy for 50 minutes. How long the First Lady will be in the hospital has not been disclosed. She is under the care of her physician, Dr. John W. Walsh, Washington obstetrician.
