Political Turmoil Roils Miss Universe Contest

Aug. 1, 1964 - Miss Greece, a brunette model from Athens, was named the new Miss Universe today, and Miss Turkey immediately walked out in a political protest.

The winner, 20-year-old Kiriaki Tsopei, stood before a national TV audience and spoke in English a speech she had to memorize because she speaks only Greek.

She faltered and managed to stammer, “I’m sorry.”

Immediately after she was chosen by nine judges, Miss Turkey, Inci Duran, walked away angrily from the girls still gathered on the stage. She was not one of the 14 semifinalists and apparently was only staging a protest because her country and Greece long have been at odds.

Miss Tsopei, who listed her occupation as “mannequin,” or model, said she painted for a hobby, wanted to be a “top model,” and thought President Johnson was the greatest man in the world.

“I am happy,” said the new Miss Universe, “very happy. I didn’t believe anything so wonderful could happen to me.”

Miss Sweden reached over to kiss the new queen and said, “She was my choice too.”

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Miss Israel, soon to be the world’s most beautiful soldier. She plans to enter the Israeli Army in October for 18 months of compulsory service.
