Apr. 19, 1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates, the National League leaders, defeated Philadelphia, 6-3, tonight for their eighth straight victory without a loss. Bill Mazeroski (pictured during spring training last month) hit a home run for the second night in a row, this time with Don Leppert on base. The homer, Mazeroski’s third of the season, was hit off Art Mahaffey, the Phils’ starter, after he had hit Leppert with a pitched ball to open the fourth inning. Mahaffey was the first of five pitchers the Phillies used. Bill Virdon, the first man up in the game, doubled and scored on John Callison’s poor throw from right field after Dick Groat had singled for the Pirates.
