May 4, 1965 - Nothing is going to come easy to the Pirates if today’s 6-3 decision over the Cubs at Wrigley Field is any indication.
You would think a three-run lead going into the last of the ninth would put them on Easy Street, especially with Al McBean pitching.
But before you could blink, the Cubs had the bases loaded with only one out. However, Glenn Beckert, the young Pittsburgh lad with Chicago, flied out, and George Altman hit a 3-2 pitch to short, and the Bucs snapped a four-game losing streak.
All the drama followed four Pirate homers which finished the Cubs.
Jerry Lynch hit a pair before retiring for defensive purposes in the sixth, when the Pirates were leading only by a run. Willie Stargell hit the other two, the final one with two on in the top of the ninth against Ted Abernathy. It made a loser out of Ernie Broglio.
It was a cold afternoon at Wrigley, where only 1,527 fans turned out for the contest. This was fewer than the crew which staffs the Astrodome, where the Cubs drew 110,569 over the weekend.
The Braves, however, outdid the Cubs. In 45-degree weather in Milwaukee tonight, only 913 fans turned out to watch the home team beat the Astros, 9-3. It was a new low in attendance for Milwaukee, where the Braves are playing their final season.
