Sept. 9, 1964 - The Philadelphia Phillies bought Vic Power from the Los Angeles Angels today as insurance against the possible loss of Frank Thomas, who suffered a cracked right thumb yesterday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Power, a righthanded-hitting first baseman, is scheduled to arrive tomorrow as a replacement for Thomas if the big slugger, who hit seven home runs since joining the Phils from the Mets last Aug. 6, can’t get into action.
The 32-year-old Power, who broke into the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954, came to the Phils “for cash above the waiver price” and a player to be named on or before Oct. 15. He hit .247 in 81 games with the Angels, with three home runs and 14 RBI’s.
