Peace Corps Workers Fly Off to Ghana

Aug. 29, 1961 - A group of Peace Corps workers (pictured) took off for Ghana today, bearing the responsibility of starting an American experiment. The first corpsmen to go abroad had freshly in mind President Kennedy's admonition that the success of the experiment depended on them. "Of course it's a challenge," said Edward Mycue, 24, of Dallas, as he and 51 other volunteers boarded the plane for Accra, on their way to high school teaching assignments in Ghana. The corpsmen will receive about $1,900 a year in salary from the Ghanian Government.
