Patriots Top Bills, 12-7, in AFL Exhibition Game

Aug. 15, 1962 - The Boston Patriots spoiled Lou Saban’s home debut as Buffalo coach with a 12-7 victory over the Bills today before 22,112 fans in an American Football League exhibition game. Babe Parilli, the Patriots’ quarterback, tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jim Crawford 6 seconds after the second quarter started. Gino Cappelletti kicked fourth-quarter field goals of 15 and 31 yards to complete the Boston scoring. Rookie quarterback, Manch Wheeler, dove over from the 1-yard line with 45 seconds left in the game for Buffalo’s only touchdown. The 41-year-old Saban switched to the Bills this year after a season and a half at the helm of the Patriots. Boston won its seventh in nine contests with the Bills. Today, the big Boston line kept Buffalo deep in their own territory most of the game.
