Sept. 13, 1964 - A 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter by Gino Cappelletti gave the Boston Patriots a 17-14 AFL victory today over the Oakland Raiders before a Youell Field crowd of 21,126.
Boston scored in four plays in the second quarter on a pass from Babe Parilli for 70 yards to Art Graham. Cappelletti booted the extra point for a 7-7 tie at the half.
With 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, Tony Romeo gathered in a 19-yard pass from Parilli to score.
“We’re a pro club and should not be fumbling on the 7-yard line,” Oakland coach Al Davis said afterward. “We had several opportunities to make good plays, but didn’t cash in. I can’t fault our defensemen. They were tigers on the ground.”
The fumble Davis referred to in the late phase was the one committed by Clem Daniels, who rarely pulls a booboo. The Raiders were on the Pats’ four-yard line in the fourth quarter when Daniels dropped Tom Flores’ handoff on a line smash.
Regarding Billy Cannon, the new back obtained in a trade from Houston, Davis said cautiously:
“He looked good on two kickoff returns and the few times he carried from scrimmage. It’s hard to tell until I see the movies. But I do think Billy will help us. After all, he was in camp only three days.”
Davis made no attempt to use Bill Miller, flanker obtained from Buffalo, because of his late arrival. “But both Miller and Cannon will work in next Saturday’s game against Houston,” he promised.
Coach Mike Holovak of the Patriots was “not surprised” that his defense held.
“Even when we score 14 points, we’re doing swell,” he smiled. “Our offense ate up the last two minutes when the Raiders were still dangerous.”
