Sept. 2, 1963 - The Green Bay Packers beat the New York Giants, 24-17, tonight for the seventh consecutive time in a wild exhibition that featured a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by the Packers’ Herb Adderley and a 90-yard return of an intercepted pass for a score by two Giant players. Green Bay fullback Jim Taylor blasted for two touchdowns and ran for nearly 100 yards. Taylor’s second score in the third quarter put the Packers in front to stay as they shut out the Giants in the second half. Adderley raced 100 yards with a Don Chandler kickoff for a score in the second period. Then, just before the end of the first half, the Giants came up with their two-man runback of a Bart Starr pass. Erich Barnes batted the ball into the hands of Jim Patton, who took it on the Giants’ 9 and returned 24 yards to the New York 33. There, he lateraled to Dick Lynch, who went 67 more for the TD to give the Giants a 17-14 halftime lead. A record 42,347, including suspended Packer halfback Paul Hornung, watched as the Giants took an early lead on a 12-yard field goal by Chandler that immediately preceded Adderley’s runback. Midway through the second period, they moved out front again when rookie Nat Cradock swept left end for 8 yards and a score. The Packers went back in front on a 60-yard drive that was capped when Taylor went over from the 1. The Packers’ third touchdown in the third quarter was set up when Earl Gros fumbled twice, recovering the first one on his 13 and running to the 45. His second bobble was picked up by Packer rookie guard Dan Grimm, who ran 18 more yards to the Giants’ 37. Taylor capped that march with a 2-yard burst. Jerry Kramer booted a 24-yard field goal to complete Green Bay’s scoring.
