Oct. 25, 1961 - Avoiding well-wishers, Pablo Picasso (pictured) spent his 80th birthday quietly in his out-of-the-way villa in Mougins, France. Hundreds of congratulatory telegrams and letters were delivered to Picasso’s usual residence, the Villa la Californie in Cannes, and admirers knocked vainly at the door. Friends of the painter said he was feeling tired and had a cold.
