Mar. 10, 1965 - Opening tonight on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre, 236 W. 45th St., was “The Odd Couple,” a comedy play by Neil Simon with Walter Matthau and Art Carney playing the lead roles of Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar, two mismatched roommates.
In the story, Felix, a neurotic news writer, is thrown out by his wife and moves in with his friend Oscar, a slovenly sportswriter. Despite Oscar's problems — careless spending, excessive gambling, a poorly kept house filled with spoiled food — he seems to enjoy life. Felix, however, seems incapable of enjoying anything and only finds purpose in pointing out his own and other people's mistakes and foibles.
