Jan. 17, 1965 - On sale today is “The Zombies,” the first studio album released by the English rock band the Zombies in the United States.
Parrot Records released the LP after the success of the group’s double-sided hit single — “She’s Not There” backed by “You Make Me Feel Good” — reached #2 on the U.S. charts. The album also includes the group’s second hit single, “Tell Her No.”
The Zombies — comprised of lead vocalist Colin Blunstone, bassist Chris White, guitarist Paul Atkinson, vocalist-keyboardist Rod Argent, and drummer Hugh Grundy — formed in St. Albans, Hertfordshire in 1961.
Last year, the group won a £250 cash prize in a beat-group competition organized by the Watford Borough Council and sponsored by the London Evening News. They then signed a recording contract with Decca and recorded their first hit, “She’s Not There.”
Five days ago, the band made their first in-person appearance on U.S. television on the first episode of NBC’s “Hullabaloo.” They played “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No” to a screaming, hysterical audience full of teenage girls.
