Sept. 25, 1964 - On sale in U.S. record stores today is “Time on My Side,” a new single by the Rolling Stones. The B-side is “Congratulations.” The song, written by Jerry Ragovoy (using the pseudonym Norman Meade), was first recorded by jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his orchestra in 1964. It was covered earlier this year by soul singer Irma Thomas.
The Rolling Stones, within days of hearing Thomas’ version, recorded the song in June at London’s Regent Sound studios. They used an organ-only intro and guitars in place of horns, with vocalist Mick Jagger imitating Thomas’ ad-libs.
