On Sale Today: “The Folk Album” by Trini Lopez

Jan. 11, 1965 - On sale today is “The Folk Album,” by Trini Lopez. Among the songs on the singer-guitarist’s seventh album are “Puff (The Magic Dragon),” “This Train,” “Lemon Tree,” and two of Bob Dylan’s compositions: “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.”

Lopez, born in Dallas in 1937, formed his first band in Wichita Falls, Tex., at the age of 15. Around 1956, Lopez and his band worked at The Vegas Club, a nightclub owned by Jack Ruby, the man who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald on Nov. 24, 1963.

His debut album, “Trini Lopez at PJ’s,” was a live record released on Frank Sinatra’s Reprise label in 1963. The record was the result of producer Don Costa hearing him perform at PJ’s nightclub in West Hollywood. The club floor was miked to get the crowd reaction on that record, as Costa and Sinatra wanted the “live” experience to come across on the recording. The album included a version of Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer,” which reached No. 1 in 26 countries and No. 3 in the U.S.
