On Sale Today: “The Animals”

Sept. 11, 1964 - On sale now in U.S. record stores is “The Animals,” the American debut album by the British rock ’n’ roll group.

The album includes several R&B standards, written by the likes of Chuck Berry (“Around and Around”), Fats Domino (“I’ve Been Around”), and John Lee Hooker (“I’m Mad Again”), as well as the hit single “House of the Rising Sun.” The group’s British debut album, with substantially differing contents, is set for release in the U.K. next month.

The Animals are Eric Burdon, Alan Price, Hilton Valentine, Chas Chandler, and John Steel. The group formed in Newcastle on Tyne in 1962 when Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo. Allegedly, they were dubbed “animals” because of their wild stage act, and the name stuck.
