Aug. 14, 1964 - On sale today is “Five by Five,” a new EP by the Rolling Stones. The songs on “Five by Five” were captured during a prolific spurt of activity by the British group at Chess Studios in Chicago two months ago. The title is a play on words — five tracks recorded by the five members of the band.
Two of the songs, credited to “Nanker Phelge,” were written by lead singer Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richard: “Empty Heart” and “2120 South Michigan Avenue.” The rest of the EP is composed of R&B covers from some of the group’s favorite artists: “If You Need Me,” “Confessin’ the Blues,” and “Around and Round,” by Chuck Berry.
In addition to the five regular members of the Stones, Ian Stewart plays organ and piano on the recording.
