Feb. 10, 1965 - On sale today is “Nowhere to Run,” a new single by Martha and the Vandellas released on the Motown label. The B-side is “Motoring.”
“Nowhere to Run,” written by the Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, was recorded in Detroit last October 21. Snow chains were used as percussion alongside the tambourine and drums.
Martha and the Vandellas originated in Detroit in 1957. Formed by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford, and Gloria Williams, Martha Reeves eventually joined the group, and she became its lead vocalist after Williams’ departure in 1962. Previous hits by the group include “Come and Get These Memories,” “Heat Wave,” and “Quicksand,” all from 1963.
