June 30, 1964 - On sale today is British singer Dusty Springfield’s first album released in the United States, “Stay Awhile/I Only Want to Be with You.” Springfield’s British debut album, “A Girl Called Dusty,” was released in April. The U.S. debut is technically a compilation of tracks from “A Girl Called Dusty,” her first two U.K. singles — “I Only Want to Be with You” and “Stay Awhile” — and other Springfield recordings. Her U.S. label, the American arm of Philips Records, decided to include the singles on an album rather than following the British practice of leaving them as singles. In addition, some B-sides and other recordings were included to form the new U.S. album.
Born in London into a family that enjoyed music, Springfield learned to sing at home. In 1958, she joined her first professional group, The Lana Sisters. Two years later, with her brother Tom Springfield and Tim Feild, Springfield formed the folk-pop vocal trio The Springfields. Two of their five 1961–63 Top 40 U.K. hits — “Island of Dreams” and “Say I Won’t Be There” – reached No. 5 in the charts, both in the spring of 1963. In 1962, they also hit big in the U.S. with their cover of “Silver Threads and Golden Needles.” Dusty Springfield's solo career began late last year with the single “I Only Want to Be with You.”
