June 26, 1964 - On sale today is “A Hard Day’s Night,” the third studio album by the Beatles, with side one containing songs from their forthcoming film of the same name. In contrast to the Beatles’ first two albums, all the vocal tracks on “A Hard Day’s Night” were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, showcasing the development of their songwriting partnership.
The U.S. release also includes four orchestral instrumental versions of Lennon-McCartney songs arranged by producer George Martin conducting an orchestra of studio musicians: “I Should Have Known Better,” “And I Love Her,” “Ringo’s Theme,” and “A Hard Day's Night.”
Several of the songs feature George Harrison playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar. Harrison is also the lead vocalist on “I’m Happy Just to Dance with You.”
The film “A Hard Day’s Night” is set to be released next month. Directed by Richard Lester, it portrays 36 hours in the lives of the Beatles as they prepare for a television performance.
