On Sale Today: “Kinks”

Oct. 2, 1964 - “Kinks,” the debut album by the British rock group The Kinks, was released today in Great Britain. The album contains the group’s international breakthrough hit, “You Really Got Me,” which was released as a single in August. Supported by a performance on the television show “Ready Steady Go!” and extensive pirate radio coverage, the single entered the U.K. charts on Aug. 15, reaching No. 1 on Sept. 19.

The Kinks were formed in London last year — originally as the Ray Davies Quartet and then the Ravens — by brothers Ray (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals). Mick Avory (drums, percussion) and Pete Quaife (bass) complete the band’s lineup.
