June 17, 1965 - On sale today is “In the Midnight Hour,” a single by soul singer and composer Wilson Pickett. The song was written by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.
Pickett recorded “In the Midnight Hour” at Stax Studios in Memphis on May 12. Besides Cropper on guitar, the band on featured Stax session regulars Al Jackson (drums) and Donald “Duck” Dunn (bass).
Pickett’s forceful, passionate style of singing was developed in the church and on the streets of Detroit under the influence of recording stars such as Little Richard, whom the 24-year-old singer has referred to as “the architect of rock and roll.”
