Sept. 15, 1964 - On sale today is “I’m into Something Good,” the debut single by Herman’s Hermits. The song, which was composed by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, was originally recorded (as “I’m into Somethin’ Good”) by Cookies member Earl-Jean on Colpix Records. It entered the U.S. Cash Box Top 100 charts on July 4 and spent 8 weeks there, reaching a high of No. 42 on August 15, and number 38 on Billboard. On July 26, Herman’s Hermits recorded the song as their debut single.
Herman’s Hermits formed in 1963 in Manchester from two different local bands. They are fronted by 16-year-old singer Peter Noone. When the group formed, Noone was already an experienced actor on the popular British T.V. soap opera, “Coronation Street.”
The band’s name came from a resemblance between Noone and Sherman from the “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoons. Sherman was shortened to Herman and then became Herman and His Hermits, which was soon shortened to Herman’s Hermits.
