Feb. 3, 1965 - On sale today is a new single by the Animals, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” The song was written by Bennie Benjamin, Horace Ott, and Sol Marcus for Nina Simone, who released her version this year. The B-side to the Animals release is “Club a Go-Go.”
Composer and arranger Ott came up with the melody and chorus lyrics for “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” after a temporary falling-out with his girlfriend, Gloria Caldwell. It was one of five songs presented on Simone’s album “Broadway-Blues-Ballads,” released last year.
The Animals’ lead singer, Eric Burdon, said of the song: “It wasn’t really considered pop material, but it somehow got passed on to us, and we fell in love with it immediately.”
The Animals were formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963. They rose to prominence with their hit single “The House of the Rising Sun,” which was released last June.
