On Sale Today: Beach Boys LP “All Summer Long”

July 13, 1964 - On sale today is the sixth long-playing record by the Beach Boys, “All Summer Long.”

The record is the group’s first not focused on themes of surfing or cars. Instead, the songs are semi-autobiographical and relate to the experiences of a typical Southern California teenager, a theme encapsulated by the title track and the front cover, a photo collage depicting the band members fraternizing with young women on a beach. The photo shoot was held at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California.

“All Summer Long,” produced and largely written by Brian Wilson, was recorded in April and May of this year, with the exception of “Drive-In,” which recorded on October 18, 1963. The album contains the band’s most complex arrangements and refined vocal performances on a record to date. Stand-out tracks are “I Get Around,” “Wendy,” “We’ll Run Away,” and the title track.

The back of the record sleeve includes written comments from each of the band members. Dennis Wilson writes: “They say I live a fast life. Maybe I just like a fast life. I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world. It won’t last forever, either. But the memories will.”

Brian Wilson answers a frequently asked question about “how I come up with my ideas” by explaining that he drew inspiration from the “feelings” associated with common teenage experiences. He then remarks, “A sociologist might say I am trying to generate a feeling of social superiority.”
