On Sale Today: “12 x 5” by the Rolling Stones

Oct. 17, 1964 - On sale in U.S. record stores today is “12 x 5,” the second American studio album by the British rock band the Rolling Stones. It is an expanded version of the EP “Five by Five,” which had followed the group’s debut album in Great Britain.

The five songs of the British EP have been fleshed out with seven additional tracks to bring the album to LP length. Among the additional tracks are the British single-only release “It’s All Over Now,” a cover of a Bobby Womack song that was the Stones’ first British No. 1 hit, and an alternative version of “Time Is on My Side.” In this alternative version, an electronic organ is more prominent than the other version’s electric guitar.

The album, like its predecessor, “The Rolling Stones (England’s Newest Hit Makers),” largely features R&B covers. However, it also contains three compositions by the developing Mick Jagger/Keith Richard songwriting team as well as two group compositions under the pseudonym “Nanker Phelge.”
