Nixon Champions Civil Rights

Mar. 13, 1965 - Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon said in New York today that, in the face of racial agitation in the land, the Republican party must remain true to its Lincoln tradition.

This means that the party should support both legislative and other programs that will serve the cause of equal rights for all U.S. citizens, Nixon said.

“The party must not compromise its strong position on civil rights for the purpose of gaining votes in Southern states,” he said.

Nixon discussed the future of the Republican party in an interview in his Manhattan law office.

The 1960 Presidential nominee, speaking of forthcoming elections, called the Johnson Administration’s foreign and domestic records vulnerable. He predicted the Republicans would come back from their crushing defeat of 1964 and make a real “horse race” of the Presidential contest in 1968.

He also forecast that the Republicans would pick up a minimum of 35 seats in the House of Representatives and perhaps half a dozen seats in the Senate in the 1966 elections.
