NFL Players Want Karras and Hornung Reinstated

Jan. 2, 1964 - The NFL Players Association recommended today the reinstatement of Paul Hornung of the Green Bay Packers and Alex Karras (pictured #71) of the Detroit Lions, who were suspended last February for gambling. Pete Retzlaff of the Eagles, the association president, said the reinstatement petition would be forwarded immediately to league commissioner Pete Rozelle. “We think that they have served their punishment, recognized they made a mistake, and are in a position to be a credit to themselves, their teams, and the league,” Retzlaff said. “We feel that if they are not reinstated, another year out of action might preclude their ever getting back into competitive shape and kill their careers.” The Players Association met in conjunction with its golf tournament tomorrow and Saturday and the “Runner-Up Bowl” game at the Orange Bowl Sunday between the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns.
