Oct. 22, 1961 - Charlie Conerly, one of the NFL’s great clutch players, led the New York Giants to a comeback 24-14 victory over the Los Angeles Rams today. Reactivated by Coach Allie Sherman, the 40-year-old quarterback from Mississippi fired touchdown passes of 10 and 37 yards to Kyle Rote and Del Shofner. These scoring strikes, accomplished within a 2-minute-3-second span in the closing stages of the fourth quarter, wiped out the 14-10 lead the Rams had gained. A Yankee Stadium crowd of 63,053, preparing to concede a Giant defeat, gave Conerly a hero’s accolade when he left the field after turning the tables.
